An exceptional 18th century French Directoire period work table, handcrafted from solid walnut in Lyon, the historic capital of France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, circa 1790s. Situated at the junction of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon has long been renowned for its masterful craftsmanship, a tradition reflected in this exquisite piece. Versatile in both form and function, this antique table features a rectangular two-plank top with breadboard ends, resting above a central drawer flanked by carved, fluted sliding storage slats on the front and back. These cleverly designed compartments provide ample storage for kitchen essentials such as utensils, pots and pans, and dishcloths. Raised on elegantly turned legs ending in bun feet and joined by an 'H' stretcher for added stability, the table exudes both strength and sophistication. The rich patina, developed through centuries of use and care, enhances its sense of history and character, while the lustrous French polish highlights the natural beauty of the walnut.
