Title

A handsome 18th century French Louis XV-Louis XVI Transition period solid walnut buffet d'appui or gentleman's buffet handcrafted by skilled artisans from Lyon during the French Transition period (1750-1775), having a rectangular plank top that sits above two drawers over two paneled and moulded doors with a center reeded stile that open to reveal ample storage with a single shelf and three drawers below. The shaped, carved apron raised on short cabriolet feet is typical of Louis XV style, in contrast with the carved panel doors and reeded stile that are typical of Louis XVI pieces. This French provincial buffet with it's narrow depth is a very versatile piece and is perfect for a dining room, foyer, hallway, or as a TV cabinet. A stunning solid and sturdy piece with a beautiful, rich patina that comes with centuries of age.

Most Transition period pieces were created outside Paris by Provincial cabinet makers and combined design elements used during Louis XV's reign (1723-1774) with Louis XVI (1774-1792) motifs in the same piece. When Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774 after his father's death, Rococo tendencies and Baroque excess were no longer popular and a movement was underway that favored the clean, straight lines of the neoclassical style.
