Title

Rare and difficult to find solid walnut Louis XIV period chateau bonnetiere, circa early 1700s. An exceptional example from the Lyon region of France, renown in the 1700s for its superior production of armoires. Typical of Louis XIV ornamentation, the upper cabinet features a stepped out cornice above a single door with a central arched panel. Smaller surrounding panels outline the center, culminating in four right-angle corners. Lower cabinet is fitted with a single drawer. Raised panels complement the design of the door on either side. Rests on two front flattened bun feet and two straight back feet. Interior is fitted with two shelves. The bold, contoured mouldings with deep relief and the wonderful aged patina give this bonnetiere a grand, yet elegant presence.

Louis XIV period bonnetieres such as this represent the quintessence of French Provincial style. They are rare and increasingly difficult to find in this condition, especially with their original hardware, for it was often removed and melted down for ammunition during the unrest of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The expense of such a grand piece was enormous and it often served as an indication of a family's wealth and social standing. Walnut bonnetieres of an exceptional size like this one, were generally reserved for the wealthiest families. Today, they are considered the finest examples of the period.
