Title

A fine 18th century period French Louis XVI commode handcrafted of walnut and fruitwoood marquetry by master artisans in Lyon, the capital city in France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region that's renowned for its furniture production during the 18th century, with its style among the most celebrated and successful provincial styles, circa 1770s. Having a rectangular beveled edge top with geometric marquetry banding and motifs of cubes drawn from ancient Greece sitting atop a facade showcasing three full-length drawers also featuring inlaid fruitwood marquetry and adorned with original neoclassical gilt bronze hardware. Raised on short tapered legs. The beauty of this antique French Lyonnaise chest of drawers is in the refinement of the details. An elegant commode with straight lines and a beautiful, lustrous French polish that easily complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV and an influential patron of the arts who played a huge role in establishing Paris as the capital of culture and taste in Europe, was responsible for sending a group of scholars to Italy to report on the discoveries of Greek and Roman art found at the archeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum during the 18th century. The findings greatly impacted and inspired the furniture designers in France, especially ébénistes, who were responsible for the design of the marquetry. Those French cabinet makers carefully studied the designs and prints and incorporated them into their furniture, resulting in a Neoclassical style that moved away from the curves and whimsy of the Rococo style and marked a return to straight lines, symmetry, and classical ornamentation.
