Title

A late 19th century French Louis XVI style commode, circa 1890s, handcrafted of mahogany by talented artisans near Paris in the Île de France region and beautifully bleached or washed to reveal its natural, warm grain and timeworn texture. This handsome chest of drawers seamlessly bridges historic French elegance with modern, sophisticated interiors. The light tones of the exterior highlight the active grain pattern and natural warmth of the mahogany.

Rather than relying on carving or elaborate ornament, the chest embodies the classic restraint of the Louis XVI neoclassical tradition. Its structural profile is defined by crisp, clean symmetry, featuring a subtly extended rectangular plank top framed along its edge by a slender brass baguette — a refined detail repeated throughout the case to define the piece's architecture without overwhelming it. Fine brass baguette trim outlines each of the three drawer fronts and continues cleanly onto the paneled sides.

The three expansive, full-width drawers retain their original brass drop-bail handles and shield-form escutcheons, accompanied by a working key. Below, a shaped apron is raised on four square tapered legs that provide a light, sophisticated footprint while maintaining absolute structural integrity. Their structural simplicity reinforces the rectilinear geometry and strict symmetry that distinguish Louis XVI furniture from the highly curving Rococo forms of the preceding Louis XV period.

Elegant without being overly formal, this bleached Parisian commode possesses the natural versatility that makes 19th century French furniture so effortless to place in contemporary spaces. Its three large drawers offer excellent storage utility for a bedroom, living room, or entryway, while the washed wood tones, geometric brass hardware, and beautifully disciplined proportions afford it a timeless architectural silhouette.
