Title

A 19th century French Louis XVI style carved oak commode from Honfleur, the picturesque port town in Normandy known for its half-timbered houses and longstanding woodworking traditions. Handcrafted circa 1850s, this elegant serpentine front commode is a refined example of Normandy craftsmanship — where generous scale and subtle decoration come together in timeless harmony.

A carved dentil frieze runs beneath the gracefully contoured plank top, setting the tone for the neoclassical details throughout. Three full-length drawers with recessed panels and petite carved rosettes in each corner provide ample storage. Original cast brass handles and escutcheons — with ornate Louis XVI style urns and draped garlands — add classical contrast and a sense of quiet luxury.

The shaped skirt features stylized bellflower carvings that evoke draped tassels, while each rounded stile is crowned with a hand carved floral rosette. Short tapered legs with carved acanthus and scrollwork anchor the case, complemented by fluted corners, raised panel detailing, and floral block carvings that all reinforce the piece’s neoclassical character.

The solid oak has been gently bleached to reveal its expressive grain and warm, nuanced tones. The result is a relaxed, sun-washed finish that pairs beautifully with both traditional and modern interiors. Elegant in silhouette and rich with patina, this versatile commode makes a refined statement in bedrooms, entryways, or casual-chic living spaces.
