Title

Bring the beauty of 19th century French culinary tradition to your table with this striking majolica asparagus cradle and matching platter, made by the renowned Longchamp faïencerie in the Burgundy region of France. Designed to cradle tender asparagus spears after cooking, the two-piece set includes a pierced insert to drain excess water and a coordinating underplate or platter to catch drips and enhance presentation.

This hand-molded faïence set is finished in a delicately shaded majolica glaze featuring soft celadon and mint green asparagus spears tipped with violet and rose hues, complemented by creamy ivory and subtle brown detailing. The platter’s border is adorned with molded stalks and textured cabbage leaf accents, a hallmark of traditional French barbotine artistry.

Founded in 1832, Longchamp became one of France’s best-known ceramic factories, celebrated for their colorful majolica wares and utilitarian faïence pottery. The term “Terre de Fer” (ironstone) references the durable glazed earthenware clay body used for these richly molded and vividly glazed designs, prized both for their beauty and functionality.

Asparagus cradles like this were a staple of elegant French dining in the 1800s and early 1900s, when the vegetable was celebrated as a seasonal delicacy. This set remains a testament to that culinary heritage and is as functional today as it is decorative — perfect for serving asparagus, crudités, or displaying as a charming centerpiece.
