A beautiful 19th century French glazed terracotta garden pot from Saint-Jean-de-Fos, a historic pottery village in the Hérault region of southern France near Anduze. Signed by its maker, the pot features a wide rolled rim, gently tapered body, and raised circular foot — a wonderfully simple form that allows its extraordinary surface to take center stage.
The original green glaze has aged into a gorgeous painterly palette of soft olive, moss, sage, and muted celadon, with areas of pale cream and the warm terracotta beneath peeking through. Generations of use and exposure have left the surface wonderfully worn, with fine craquelure, rubbed edges, glaze losses, and irregular patches of color that give the pot its unmistakable antique character. Soft touches of faded blush and chalky white appear beneath the green, creating a beautifully layered patina that feels as though it has been lifted straight from an old garden in the South of France.
Saint-Jean-de-Fos has been celebrated for its pottery tradition for centuries, thanks in part to the clay-rich landscape surrounding the village. Its potters became particularly known for glazed utilitarian wares and architectural pottery, with copper-derived greens among the characteristic colors associated with the region. During the 19th century, pottery production flourished in the village, with local workshops producing pieces intended for everyday life in the homes and gardens of southern France.
Today, this signed garden pot is as much a decorative object as a functional vessel. Its sculptural shape and beautifully weathered green glaze would be lovely planted with lavender, herbs, or a small citrus tree, or simply displayed on its own where every bit of its centuries-old patina can be appreciated.
