Title

A rare and decorative 19th century Portuguese red slipware baking dish, handcrafted in terracotta and richly embellished with folk art motifs inside and out. The glossy, earthy red slip glaze provides a striking backdrop for the creamy yellow sgraffito designs, where two stylized tulips radiate across the interior base in dotted patterns. Along the exterior, rows of triangular or tree-like dotted motifs alternate with small circular flowers, continuing the rhythmic folk decoration around the dish. Its ruffled, hand pinched rim adds playful movement and charm, while the applied side handles ensured both practicality and beauty.

Produced in rural regions such as Alentejo and Estremadura, slipware of this kind was prized for its durability and artistry, often used in kitchens for baking and serving yet admired as ornament in the home. With its bold tulip motifs, scalloped rim, and warm patina, this piece captures the spirit of Portuguese folk ceramics and offers a rustic yet refined addition to any collection.
