Title

A vibrant 19th century Portuguese red slipware serving bowl, hand thrown in terracotta and richly decorated in the rustic folk tradition of rural Portugal. The glossy red slip glaze provides a warm backdrop for the creamy sgraffito designs, which feature a large central fish with patterned body flanked by leafy sprays and stylized flowers. The inner wall of the bowl continues the decoration with stylized floral and fern leaf details, adding interest and balance to the form. Its gently flared sides and thickened rim were designed for durability, while the playful folk motifs highlight the artistry of Portuguese potters.

Produced in regions such as Alentejo and Estremadura, slipware of this kind served a dual purpose — functional for preparing or serving food while also enlivening the home with color and ornament. With its bold fish and flower motifs and warm earthy patina, this bowl embodies the spirit of Iberian folk pottery and makes a striking collectible for rustic interiors or ceramic collections.
