Title

A captivating 19th century Portuguese red slipware bowl, richly decorated with whimsical folk art motifs that embody the rustic artistry of Iberian ceramics. Hand thrown in terracotta and finished with a glossy red slip glaze, the bowl features three boldly incised fish swimming around the interior, each separated by a large stylized flower. At the bottom, a central floral motif anchors the design, adding balance and charm. A stylized  leafy border encircles the rim, unifying the composition with rhythmic folk inspired detail. The creamy yellow sgraffito incisions stand out beautifully against the earthy red ground, highlighting the traditional decorative techniques of rural Portugal.

Slipware such as this was typically produced in regions like Alentejo and Estremadura, where artisans passed down patterns and methods for generations. Used in kitchens for serving or preparing food, these bowls were valued for both their utility and their lively designs. Today, the piece stands as an authentic example of Portugal’s ceramic heritage — a rustic collectible that adds character and history to any pottery collection or interior.
