Title

A beautifully timeworn 19th century Catalan lebrillo bowl from Northeastern Spain, crafted in traditional red terracotta and finished in the classic verde y miel (green and honey) glaze. These wide, shallow earthenware basins were once staples in Spanish households — used for washing vegetables, mixing dough, preparing meals, or serving food at the family table.

The interior is coated in a warm honey yellow glaze, animated by expressive freehand green brushwork that moves fluidly across the surface in loose, organic strokes. The decoration feels spontaneous and painterly rather than formal — a hallmark of provincial Catalan folk pottery. A wide everted rim and gently sloping sides give the bowl its classic lebrillo silhouette, both practical and sculptural. The exterior remains largely unglazed, revealing the rich red clay body with subtle tonal shifts and natural firing marks. Areas of glaze wear, scattered losses, and fine surface craquelure speak to generations of use. These slight imperfections do not detract — they deepen the character, telling the story of a piece once entirely utilitarian and now beautifully preserved. The patina is soft, honest, and layered with time — the very quality that gives Iberian pottery its enduring soul.

Both decorative and functional, a lebrillo like this makes a striking centerpiece filled with seasonal fruit, artichokes, or citrus, can hang as a dramatic wall accent, or rest simply on a table or shelf to bring warmth and Mediterranean ease to a space.
