Full of elegance and provincial French charm, this mid-18th century Louis XV period walnut bench from Lyon, circa 1760s, is a beautiful example of the region's refined craftsmanship and enduring design sensibility. Gracefully shaped and generously sized, the bench features a hand carved scalloped apron with nailhead trim and rests on four richly patinated cabriole legs terminating in intricately sculpted pieds de biche, or hoof feet, a beloved detail in French furniture from the Rococo era.

 

Lyon, known for its status as the silk weaving capital of France, also developed a distinctive style of cabinetry and furniture. Lyonnais furnishings like this bench often balance the curvaceous elegance of Louis XV forms with a more restrained provincial flair. The result is a bench that feels both luxurious and livable.

 

The walnut has aged beautifully, developing a deep, warm patina that enhances the graceful contours of the frame. The bench is upholstered in a jacquard fabric woven in soft ivory and adorned with scrolling floral vines and trailing roses in hues of raspberry, sage, pale gold, and steel blue. The textile’s rich texture and palette harmonize effortlessly with the sinuous silhouette of the frame, offering both comfort and classic French allure.
