Title

19th Century French gargoulette from Carcassone in southwest France, having a warm ochre glaze, one handle, and two spouts, one for pouring one for drinking, circa 1860s. Usually worn on a belt, this thermos like jug kept water cool and allowed those working in the hot sun to have a drink of cool water. The drinking spout was made long and thin so several people could drink from the cruche without touching their lips to the spout and the pouring spout had a trumpet like shape and was corked. These French utilitarian water jugs were only half glazed as they would have been stored in the ground to keep cool. Because gargoulettes were usually worn on a belt, they did not suffer as much breakage as other vessels. Unusual to find one complete with a cork. We have a large selection of antique French confit pots. Contact us for more pictures or information.
