Title

An early 18th century Louis XIII style coffer or trunk handcrafted of solid old growth French walnut having a beautiful rich and dark color patina, circa 1710. This handsome trunk features typical Renaissance style geometric carvings like the raised lozenge on the front and raised à pointe de diamants or diamond tipped decoration on the side panels. Raised on bun feet. Original iron handles and hardware. Coffers and trunks were used to keep all sorts of treasures under lock and key while still functioning as seats, tables, and even beds for children or very small adults. They were the main item of furniture in early French households, and it was fairly common to have a coffer in every room. The bottom drawer adds additional storage for linens, toys, games, or clothes.
