Title

A stunning early 20th century French Black Forest barometer with thermometer, circa 1900. Found in a hunting lodge in Lyon, this antique weather station features a beautifully hand carved walnut frame presenting forest leaves and branches with a carved hunting dog's head at the top and a pair of hunting rifles, their barrels crossing each other, mounted below as if they're tied around the dog's neck. The central section features the barometer, known as an aneroid barometer, an instrument used for measuring pressure as a method that does not involve liquid and that was invented by French scientist Lucien Vidi in the 1840s. A carved fringed leather hunting bag is featured at the bottom of the piece. The details are wonderfully executed and with its popular subject and dark patina, this handsome carved Black Forest barometer will bring a touch of rustic authenticity to any decor, particularly if placed in a mountain cabin, country home, or hunting lodge. A fantastic example of the master artisanry of the region. In working order.

The Black Forest is actually located in a triangular area that borders Germany, France, and Switzerland and it extends along the Rhine River. Wood carving has been a traditional cottage industry in the region since the beginning of the 1800s. Black Forest carvings became a symbol of luxury and wealth in Europe.
