An exceptional early 20th century French Louis XVI style faux partner desk attributed to Maurice Rinck, circa 1910, crafted in rich mahogany and beautifully restored in France by a master artisan. Elegant in proportion and exceptionally handsome from every angle, the desk combines the restrained architectural lines of Louis XVI neoclassicism with superb French cabinetmaking and finely executed decorative metalwork.

Designed in the manner of a traditional partner desk, the piece features a fully finished reverse, allowing it to float beautifully within a room rather than being placed against a wall. The working side is arranged with three drawers across the apron, while the opposite side is finished to create the balanced, formal appearance of a partner desk.

The mahogany is beautifully accented by its original metalwork. A continuous brass baguette surrounds the top, creating a crisp golden outline against the warmth of the wood. Original gilt bronze mounts, trim, escutcheons, elegant swag-form drawer pulls, and sabots add restrained neoclassical ornament throughout.

Inset into the top is a restored warm cognac leather writing surface bordered by delicate gilt tooling in a classical geometric pattern. The mellow caramel-cognac color of the leather is especially beautiful against the deep mahogany tones, whose polished surface reveals subtle variations in grain and a rich, luminous patina.

Tall, tapered legs give the desk its graceful architectural silhouette, each accented beneath the corners with substantial gilt bronze collars and terminating in original gilt bronze sabots. About Maurice Rinck
The Rinck story began in 1841 with the establishment of its first cabinetmaking workshop. By the beginning of the 20th century, the house had developed a reputation for superb craftsmanship and finely executed interpretations of historic furniture. Maurice Rinck later became an important figure in the firm's history, helping carry its tradition of exceptional French ébénisterie into the 20th century while also participating in the emergence of Art Deco. Rinck's history records Maurice Rinck and Lucie Renaudot receiving a gold medal for innovation at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition.
