Title

A stunning antique Black Forest carved wooden trophy plaque with a large set of antlers signed and dated 1815 mounted atop a large hand carved plaque featuring a collar or wreath of intricately carved oak leaves and acorns with the initials RH and the date 1921. Hand carved in Switzerland most probably for a wealthy nobleman during the early years of the 20th century, the thrill of the hunt has been beautifully captured in solid walnut. Celebrating the hunt, the rustic plaque features a hunter dressed in traditional hunting garb with his rifle and game bag, and his loyal dog beside him as he blows the horn. Carved trees, climbing ivy, and other foliage surround him. The details are wonderfully executed and bring so much life and expression to the hunter. With its popular subject and dark patina, this intricately carved Black Forest trophy plaque will bring a touch of rustic authenticity to any decor, particularly if placed in a mountain cabin, country home, or hunting lodge. A fantastic example of the master artisanry of the region.

The Black Forest is actually located in a triangular area that borders Germany, France, and Switzerland and it extends along the Rhine River. Wood carving has been a traditional cottage industry in the region since the beginning of the 1800s. Black Forest carvings became a symbol of luxury and wealth in Europe.
