Title

Late 18th century buffet handcrafted of solid cherrywood during the French Transition period (1750-1775). Most Transition period pieces were created outside Paris by provincial cabinet makers combining design elements used during the reign of Louis XV (1723-1774) with Louis XVI (1774-1792) motifs in the same piece. Rococo tendencies and Baroque excess were no longer en vogue when Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774 after his father's death. A new movement was underway that favored the clean, straight lines of the neoclassical style. This beautiful buffet has a moulded top with chamfered corners above a center drawer with a tirette or pull out utility shelf below flanked by carved ebonized diamond motifs typical of the Louis XVI period. The two moulded, panel doors open to reveal a single interior shelf. The carved serpentine apron raised on short cabriole legs is typical of the Louis XV period. This antique French buffet will add charm and character to any room while providing plenty of useful storage.
