Title

A handsome mid-19th century French Louis XIII style carved hunting buffet deux corps or bibliothèque de chasse, circa 1850s, handcrafted in Lyon of solid oak that has been bleached, allowing the carved motifs of the antique cabinet to gain prominence. The intricately carved chapeau de gendarme crown featuring floral and foliate carvings sits over a pair of carved doors, with original antique hand blown glass flanked by barley twist columns, opening to reveal three shelves for displaying china, glassware, a priceless book collection, family heirlooms, or sports and hunting trophies just as the French did hundreds of years ago. The lower buffet cabinet features two carved drawers adorned with carved branch handles above two doors with bas relief carvings of trophy game birds. The two intricately detailed doors are solid carved panels done by an expert ébéniste and are also flanked by barley twist columns. The inside reveals a single shelf for additional storage. Raised on two front onion feet and two back block feet. The open display and closed storage of this striking Lyonnaise bookcase is functional as well as highly decorative. A versatile statement piece that is perfect for use in a dining room, living room, office, or library.
