Title

A remarkable mid-19th century French Louis XVI style serpentine commode from Normandy, circa 1850s, beautifully handcrafted of solid oak and bleached or washed to highlight its elegant carvings and aged grain. Normandy furniture is known for its intricately carved motifs and robust craftsmanship, and this piece is a fine example of the region’s artistry.

The commode features a serpentine front with a shaped plank top resting above a carved frieze embellished with a guilloché motif — a series of interlaced discs reflecting the neoclassical taste for order and refinement. Below, three drawers follow the same serpentine contour, richly adorned with floral sprays, scrolling tendrils, and central shield escutcheons crowned by laurel leaf garlands, emblems of triumph and classical elegance. Lamb’s tongue carving outlines the drawers, lending rhythmic detail, and original brass drop handles with foliate backplates complete the look, their curves complementing the flowing serpentine profile. The carved apron is accented with floral and foliate tendrils. Raised on short turned feet. This antique chest of drawers balances sculptural presence with graceful neoclassical restraint. and reflects both the craftsmanship and enduring character of 19th century Normandy furniture.

A timeworn patina enriches the bleached oak, with warm variations in tone that speak to its centuries-old history. A quintessential piece of Normandy furniture, this Louis XVI serpentine commode balances sculptural presence with graceful neoclassical restraint and would make a statement in any room, blending seamlessly with both antique and contemporary interiors.
