Whimsical and wonderfully weathered, this mid-20th century French garden seat takes the playful form of an oversized mushroom, hand-cast in solid concrete. Rising from a rounded base sprouting clusters of smaller red capped fungi, the stool captures the imaginative spirit of mid-century French jardins — where sculptural, storybook forms were treasured for both decoration and durability.

 

The broad, gently cupped seat retains its original painted finish, now softened and beautifully mottled by decades of outdoor exposure. A natural mossy patina mingles with traces of red, green, and white pigment, giving the surface a richly textured, organic appearance. A small central drainage hole recalls its long life in the garden, yet the piece remains sturdy and fully functional for occasional seating or use as a whimsical side table.

 

Throughout the mid-20th century, mushroom seats or stools and other fantastical concrete forms brought charm and delight to terraces, pathways, and shaded corners — adding a sense of playful fantasy to everyday garden landscapes.
