Title

A fine pair of carved 19th century French Louis XVI style bergère marquise upholstered armchairs, often referred to as ‘The Queens’ chair, having walnut frames with neoclassical carved details, circa 1880s. Each oversized chair features a low carved, straight square back topped with a carved upper rail, and down-swept scrolling arms with volute carved armrests that lead to a spacious padded seat with removable cushion. Raised on stop-fluted toupie feet headed by carved rosettes. A classic piece of furniture that has been around for centuries, the bergère marquise was often used in formal settings, such as the parlor or sitting room. Comfortable, stylish, and versatile, it's a great choice for any home. With a deep rich patina, this large and plush pair of French armchairs will make an elegant addition to the living room, bedroom, or library. Strong and sturdy, they're perfect for the husband wanting a roomy chair. Need to be reupholstered.

Louis XVI furniture is emblematic of the Neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century, which saw the end of the Absolute Monarchy. It reflects the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution and was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for Queen Marie Antoinette.
