Title

A pair of mid-20th-century French Brutalist style chauffeuse, or fireplace chairs, by Charles Dudouyt, circa 1930s. These low, carved oak chairs combine rustic charm with refined craftsmanship, featuring ladder back frames with striking round finials, wide and deep original rush seats, and round, truncated legs supported by turned stretchers. With a warm, rich patina, these sturdy chairs offer comfortable, relaxed seating perfect for fireside lounging.

Charles Dudouyt began his career as a cabinetmaker, working for private clients and notable names like Dominique. He quickly developed a distinctive style, blending traditional forms with modern motifs drawn from the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. Known for using solid wood, Dudouyt incorporated geometric carvings and inlays of exotic woods, ivory, or bone, creating both texture and visual contrast. His restrained color palette, from light to dark brown, and clean, elegant shapes highlighted the beauty of his materials. Though Dudouyt's work was largely overlooked after his death in 1947, his pieces have seen a resurgence in recent decades. Today, they are celebrated for their quality, refined aesthetic, and important contributions to Art Deco furniture, attracting collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide.
