A rare and unusual late 19th century French billot de boucher, or butcher block, handcrafted from walnut with a mix of fruitwood parquetry near the historic city of Toulouse, circa 1890s. Made as a hardworking piece of utilitarian furniture, this one has a decidedly playful side, with its substantial 3.5-inch-thick butcher block transformed by a meticulously hand-inlaid games top featuring boards for chess, checkers, and trictrac, a traditional French tables game played on a backgammon-style board.
The top is particularly striking, with contrasting fruitwoods used to create the chess and checkerboards as well as the elongated triangular points of the trictrac board. The different tones and grain patterns give the surface a beautifully graphic quality while still allowing the warmth and character of the old wood to take center stage. An inset border frames the entire composition, while heavy original iron straps reinforce the corners — a reminder that beneath those games, this was first and foremost a serious butcher's work table.
A single drawer is centered beneath the top and fitted with its original turned wooden knob set against a wonderfully quirky diamond shaped escutcheon. Below, the deep apron is pierced with a repeating pattern of circles, points, and squared notches that cleverly echo the silhouettes and geometry of the king and queen chess pieces. Paneled corner blocks transition to stout, tapering, turned and fluted legs endin in bun feet, giving the antique table an unexpected architectural elegance.
The combination of woods has aged beautifully. More than a century of use has left the surface with scratches, knife marks, darkened areas, softened edges, and irregularities that give an old French butcher block its unmistakable character. The original iron corner straps have developed their own dark, mottled patina, providing a handsome contrast to the warmth of the wood.
