Title

A striking set of six vintage majolica oyster plates made by Proceram, France, a historic ceramics manufacturer located in Aubagne, a town long celebrated for its pottery traditions in the South of France. Operating under the name Proceram from 1939 until the factory closed in 1977, the company was known for its artistic craftsmanship and vibrant majolica glazes in earthy tones like ochre, brown, yellow, and teal.

Proceram produced just one distinct shell pattern, designed in a stunning Art Deco style. Each plate features six scalloped wells radiating around a central sauce or lemon well, combining classic French elegance with a modernist edge. This particular set is finished in a rich, sunny golden glaze, making it an especially eye-catching example of Proceram’s work. The plates are as decorative as they are functional — perfect for serving oysters, shrimp cocktail, or even dessert. Whether displayed on a wall or used for entertaining, these French oyster plates, with their timeless appeal, capture the art de vivre of French dining and mid-century Provençal style.

Oyster plates in faïence and majolica forms became a dining essential in 19th century France, particularly during the Belle Époque, when oysters were a symbol of refinement and often featured at festive gatherings and soirées. Specialized ceramic plates, typically with wells to cradle each oyster and a central area for sauces or lemon, were designed not just for presentation but also to keep oysters cool when chilled. Oyster plates like these became especially popular in faïence and majolica forms, crafted by respected French makers such as Sarreguemines, Gien, and Proceram.
