Title

Rustic charm meets Breton tradition in this small 19th century French breadboard, circa 1870s. Hand-carved from dense hardwood, it features a distinctive carved cross encircled by a laurel wreath. Centrally placed, the cross was probably carved as a devotional mark or blessing over the daily bread, a tradition observed in many rural French households where food and faith were deeply intertwined. This touch of symbolism, signifying both religious devotion and artisanal pride, adds another layer of meaning to an already storied piece.

The practical design of the long, slightly tapered handle, complete with a hanging hole near the top, allowed the board to be easily hung by the hearth to dry. Its extended length also provided a cooler grip and better control when working near the fire. The rustic surface tells its own story, worn smooth by generations of daily use. Time and touch have burnished the wood to a soft, lustrous sheen, its warm patina deepened by decades of bread slicing, dough shaping, and the rhythms of rural life.

A true culinary antique, this board would make a charming addition to any kitchen. Whether displayed on a kitchen wall, used to serve fromage and charcuterie, or simply collected as a piece of culinary heritage, this petite breadboard embodies the soul of French country living. *Shown with additional antique breadboards, each sold separately. This listing is for the featured board only.
