Title

Celebrate the art of French coastal dining with this striking oyster service, crafted by the renowned Faïencerie de Longchamp of Burgundy. Made in the 1950s-60s, this complete 13-piece set features 12 individually molded oyster plates and a generous matching serving platter, each glazed in rich tones of golden ochre, deep sienna, and earthy brown. The surface is embossed in a tactile basketweave pattern, with six scallop shaped wells radiating around a central sauce well on each piece — a signature design of midcentury faïence serviceware.

The plates each feature six deeply molded scallop shell wells arranged around a central sauce reservoir. The surface is overlaid with a finely detailed basketweave relief background, lending texture and rustic charm to the radiant palette. The deep caramel brown glaze pools dramatically within each shell, creating contrast and dimension, while the serving platter repeats the design at a grander scale — perfect for presenting oysters, chilled shrimp, or seasonal crudités.

Founded in the 1832 in the village of Longchamp, near Dijon, with Roman pottery roots, the Longchamp factory became a celebrated name in French ceramics. Influenced by the naturalistic barbotine movement of the 19th century and revitalized in the mid-20th century, the faïencerie became known for its expressive majolica tableware, lustrous lead-based glazes, and and finely molded majolica—embodying a rustic yet refined provincial aesthetic that made its way to tables across Europe and the Americas. These pieces bear the Longchamp crest hallmark on the reverse, a stylized turreted gate that nods to the faïencerie’s roots in Burgundy, a region long revered for its pottery traditions.

This set reflects the enduring popularity of oyster plates from the Belle Époque through the midcentury, when seafood service was an essential part of gracious entertaining. The vivid color palette evokes the golden glow of candlelight on a seaside table, while the texture and tone of the glazed earthenware celebrate the natural forms of the sea. Whether used for service or styled as a dramatic wall installation, this handsome oyster set is a collectible treasure.
