Title

A refined marriage of neoclassical symmetry and Provençal elegance, this set of six 19th century French Louis XVI style balloon back dining chairs exemplifies the artistry and sophisticated elegance of Louis XVI design. Hand carved in the 1850s by skilled artisans near the hilltop village of Gordes in Provence, these iconic chairs — known in France as Montgolfier chairs for their balloon-shaped backs inspired by the iconic Montgolfier hot air balloons that soared across France in the 18th century — are rich The backs, with their sculpted curves and molded frames, lend a sense of lightness and classical proportion that define the Louis XVI aesthetic.

The chairs rest on tapering, stop-fluted legs, adorned with gilded rosettes, a hallmark of neoclassical ornamentation. The original painted finish, a soft dusty celadon green with creamy undertones, has mellowed beautifully over time, while traces of the original parcel gilt adds a quiet opulence to the frames. The upholstered seats remain intact with their woven fabric in vivid coral and raspberry tones, accented with original brass nailhead trim, adding a lively splash of color and textural richness. The rich contrast between the lively textile and the muted painted frame lends depth and character — a vibrant expression of a cultivated sense of style. * French Bleached Oak Table with Iron Base sold separately.

Robustly constructed yet elegantly scaled, these versatile chairs are ideal for use around a dining table or as occasional seating in a salon, library, or entryway. Whether flanking a console or placed en suite, they bring an enduring sense of chic à la parisienne and Southern charm to any interior.
