Title

A rare 19th century French earthenware cake or baking mold from Soufflenheim in the Alsace region, circa 1880s. In the shape of a lobster or crayfish, this Alsatian mold symbolizes fertility because of the large number of eggs these crustaceans lay for reproducing. Molds like this were used to bake cakes offered at weddings. Made from terracotta, the inside of the mold has a burnt orange glaze and is unglazed on the outside. Stands on three short, stumpy feet. A fabulous, very collectible piece of French cooking history that will add a bit of Country French charm to any kitchen.
